Applying for a Home

    Basic Eligibility

Applicants must be...
...residents of Chippewa or Mackinaw County.
...U.S. Citizens or legal residents.
...willing to accept the style and location of the Habitat house.
...willing to build a community with Habitat, other Habitat owners, and their new neighborhood.

    Qualifying

Habitat has three main criteria.
1) Need due to living quarters that are overcrowded, unsafe, substandard, or non-accessible to a family member, or having rent that is too high in relation to gross income.
2) Ability to repay the new home's mortgage, as demonstrated by financial responsibility and a steady source of reliable income. Applicants must show proof of total gross household income as part of the application process.
3) Willingness to partner by showing concern for the proper maintenance of their current living quarters. Adults are expected to work at least 300 hours on the home or other approved projects, and participate in programs to develop and use maintenance and budgeting skills.

    Community Referrals

Social agencies, churches and individuals are encouraged to inquire on behalf of a potential applicant. Please encourage the applicant to follow through.
